Why We Plan for Camp Kesem

Giggles, co-chair of Camp Kesem Vanderbilt, shares why she joined Camp Kesem.

If you know me, you know summer camp is a huge part of my life. I know I would not be the same person today if I had not gone to summer camp so now, I want to give all children the same experience I had. Cancer should not prevent a child from attending summer camp. That’s why I joined Camp Kesem, to make sure every child enjoys the simple pleasure of playing capture the flag, of making their first best friend, of summer camp.

One of my favorite memories of camp was the Empowerment Ceremony. No one should have to say “but that was before my mom got cancer” or “that was before my dad was sick,” especially a 8 or 9 year old camper. I found myself tearing up at the strength of my campers. Almost every camper felt comfortable enough to share a part of their story. That was the moment I knew Camp Kesem was way more than just a summer camp.
