Why Do You Kesem?
The empowerment ceremony is my favorite part of Camp Kesem. It happens just once during the week of camp, and it gives everyone an opportunity to open up and share how cancer has affected them.
We begin by sitting in a circle. We calm down by using our hands to create noises that resemble a rainstorm. We take turns talking. We answer the question, “Why do you Kesem?” Many of us cry. Most us of take comfort in sharing our story.
I Kesem for my mom, who was diagnosed with (and beat!) thyroid cancer when I was 11. I Kesem for my grandpa, who beat cancer a few months ago. I Kesem for my family friend who supported my involvement in Camp Kesem emotionally and financially even as his life came to an end due to cancer.
Now, Camp Kesem UW-Madison invites you, our campers, camp families, counselors and alumni, to share why you Kesem. You can join our virtual empowerment ceremony by emailing us or tweeting at us (@campkesemwis). If you would like to share your story on our blog, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
