Applications for Camp 2015 are now open! Questions about camper applications can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Stay posted for updates by keeping up with us on Facebook!
Camp 2015 will be from August 2nd – 8th, 2014 at Camp Gilmont in Gilmer, TX! The camp is about 4 hours away from the Houston-area, and we are renting a bus to get everyone there and back safely. Camp Gilmont has extensive facilities and activities for all campers. The cabins are fully air-conditioned with indoor plumbing, and there are also cabins that are handicap accessible.
All our counselors are student volunteers from Rice University. In addition to having extensively trained, CPR & First Aid certified counselors, we will have full-time professional staff on site, including 2 registered nurses and one certified mental health professional.

Here’s what families have to say about Camp Kesem:
“I just have to say a huge thank you to you all! Our 3 girls had a fabulous time. After a little mom and dad love and a nap they were ready to come back to camp! They wanted to get up this morning and put on their bug spray and sun screen and hit the activities. The memories you all gave my children [are] so awesome. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to our children. Also, the letters you wrote to them just made me weep. We will treasure them forever. I’m sure you heard things this past week that you could never imagine that one little person could take. They do it like champs. Thanks for giving them a fun week and leaving cancer in the shadows for a little bit. Can’t wait for the reunion! You made a difference in their lives!”it is hard to adequately describe the “Kesem experience”, but I cannot speak highly enough of the student counselors from Rice and their advisor, Rafiki. Simply put, they are incredibly intelligent, driven, energetic and organized individuals
- Monica Sigler, mother of Camp Kesem Rice campers Piggie, Diamond, and Flyer
“It is hard to adequately describe the ‘Kesem experience’, but I cannot speak highly enough of the student counselors from Rice…Simply put, they are incredibly intelligent, driven, energetic and organized individuals…the counselors created a caring and safe space for campers to share thoughts and experiences on how cancer has affected their lives. This unique and empathetic environment most definitely started a positive ripple effect for the campers to practice healthy ways to deal with challenges in their lives, and to know they are not alone. Watching the counselors support their campers reminded me of what drives me in my career. If 10% of the world had the maturity, dedication and magic of these Rice students, our world would be a much better place. ”
