Favorite Song from Camp

I’m not entirely sure what the name of my favorite song from camp is but I do know that it goes a little something like this,

Camper A “Hey [insert camper B’s name here]!”

            Camper B “Hey what?”

Camper A “Hey [insert camper B’s name here]!”

            Camper B “Hey what?”

            Camper A “Shake your booty!”

            Camper B “No way!”

            Camper A “Shake your booty!”

            Camper B “O.K!”

Everyone: “Jump! Shake your booty, jump jump! Shake your booty!”

This might not be the funniest, liveliest or most creative song but it’s my favorite because through this song counselors get a chance to really see the campers growing and becoming more comfortable hanging out with all of their friends.

This song puts individual campers on the spot and gives them a chance to stand out and dance and become the center of attention for a couple of verses. A few of the kids take to this song right away and enjoy the attention but most don’t, at least at the beginning of camp. Before the kids get a chance to know each other, the opportunity to be in the limelight is one that a lot of the campers are reluctant to take. Often times they blush and don’t want to do the dance or they do it half-heartedly. But as the days go by and everyone spends more and more time together, even the shier campers start to gain enthusiasm. Until by the last day, everyone is singing along and enjoying themselves. It may seem silly but these small steps, when added together, form the basis of friendships and memories that these kids will cherish forever. As a counselor, witnessing these little transformations is one of the most rewarding aspects of camp.
