Counselor Perspective: Bubbles
When I first heard about Camp Kesem, I thought it was such an amazing organization. I immediately joined, probably like most of you new counselors and got really involved. Back then, I had no idea what I was getting into. I did not understand why counselors would tear up when talking about the empowerment ceremony, or why all the kids looked forward to it so much. But I was still very excited, nevertheless. Fast forward a couple months, and I was finally, FINALLY meeting my kids. (Go blue unit!) Some were excited, and some were a little shy. Soon we all were on the bus, headed to the wonderful Camp Flaming Arrow. Throughout the week, I grew very close to all the kids. I loved the naming ceremony, I loved watching all the kids form such strong friendships. My favorite was the empowerment ceremony (just wait!). It is not an exaggeration to say that this was one of the most impactful weeks of my life. These children, some only 6 years old, are some of the bravest people I know. As a coordinator, Camp Kesem takes up a lot of my time, but I absolutely love it. To me, there is not a worthier organization. It’s more than just camp songs and fun games. If I could choose, every week would be camp week. Camp makes me happy, and CK really is a family.
