CK Michigan Counselors Ready for Blast Off

Camp Kesem at the University of Michigan is getting ready for another amazing week of camp, with the theme “Camp Kesem Out of This World” which starts this Sunday, August 11. With their jump in the number of campers from 99 in 2012 to 128 coming next week, we wanted to give you a peek into the lives of a few of their counselors, old and new!

tutu

Tutu is a 3rd year returning counselor.

What are you studying in school?

I’m a senior majoring in Neuroscience. I hope to earn my Masters degree in Health Informatics after I graduate.

How did you get your camp name?

My camp name is Tutu and I got this name after mentioning to my fellow counselors that I took ballet classes for 13 years.

Why do you do CK?

There are so many amazing reasons, I don’t even know where to start! Camp is the best week of the year, and I’ve made so many wonderful friends – camper and counselor. Each year, I continue to be inspired by both my counselor peers and all the incredibly strong campers. It’s great to see all of our hard work all year pay off at camp and to feel like you’re part of something so important.

Where is the coolest place you have traveled?

I would have to say New Orleans! I got to perform in the Superdome with the Michigan Marching Band for the Sugar Bowl and it was just the coolest experience. The whole jazz vibe of the area is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been.

Do you have a favorite camp story?

Hands down, the legend of the Yeti. Did you know that the Yetis’ favorite food is chicken ribs? :)

lambchop

Lamb Chop is a first year counselor.

How did you hear about Camp Kesem?

A friend of mine at the lab I work at came back from camp just beaming. He told me about this magical week he had at Camp Kesem and encouraged me to get involved once school started back up in the fall. I went to a few meetings and once I learned more about CK, I knew this was something I absolutely needed to be a part of. Shout out to Spot for looping me into Camp Kesem!

How did you get your camp name?

I used to love watching “Lamb Chop’s Play-Along” on PBS as a little kid. Nobody else seems to remember that little sock puppet from the 1960s though. Between that and my love for TCM, Billie Holiday, and raisin bran, I guess you could call me a bit of an old soul.

What is your favorite camp song?

Burrito. I live for fire sauce.

If you could choose one celebrity to be a Camp Kesem counselor, who would it be?

Oh definitely J-Law. That girl is the most candid and relatable actress out there. I’m 100% positive she would be the most fun and outgoing counselor. This choice is partially selfish on my part because if Jennifer Lawerence were a counselor at CK, it would give me the opportunity for us to be the best friends I know in my heart we would be.

spot

Spot is a returning counselor, and will be one of the co chairs for 2013-2014.

What are you studying in school?

I am an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major and a Spanish minor.

What are you most looking forward to at camp?

I am looking forward to seeing all of the familiar camp faces again: returning campers, my fellow co-counselors, camp staff.  It’s always so special to be able to see these people, many of whom I haven’t seen since the end of camp last year.  I am also VERY excited to meet our new campers and counselors and I look forward to establishing relationships with all of them, too!

What is the craziest/silliest thing you’ve ever done at camp?

My first year as a counselor, I unknowingly volunteered to be part of a ‘human sundae’ and was called up onstage to be covered in whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles while all the campers watched and laughed!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Christchurch, New Zealand.

If you could choose one celebrity to be a Camp Kesem counselor, who would it be?

I would probably say Kristen Wiig because she is hilarious and would be great in the talent show!

PB

Princess Buttercup will be a Program Counselor for her first year at camp.

How did you hear about Camp Kesem?

A great friend, and sorority sister, of mine was a part of it and encouraged me to come to a meeting. From then, I was hooked!

How did you get your camp name?

I love the movie “The Princess Bride” and am admittedly a bit of a princess, so the name was fitting.

What are you most looking forward to at camp?

I am a program counselor and we have some really fun activities planned. I just can’t wait to get started!

If you could have an exotic animal for a pet, what would it be?

I think having a giraffe would be awesome; like having a horse, but even better!

stickz

This will be Stickz’ second year at camp.

What are you studying in school?

Environmental Science! Go Earth!

How did you get your camp name?

It’s Stickz because I like playing drums and I like the outdoors!

Why do you do CK?

I do CK for the kids. It is so rewarding to see the joy on each camper’s face when you know about all the hard times they’ve had to go through. When the week is over, the sense of accomplishment you feel is incomparable to anything else.

If you could choose one celebrity to be a Camp Kesem counselor, who would it be?

Definitely Shaq. I could see him being so good with the kids.

blossom

This will be Blossom’s first year at camp!

How did you hear about Camp Kesem?

I heard about Camp Kesem at Festifall – a couple of days at the beginning of the school year where hundreds of clubs and student organizations set up booths in the Michigan diag. I was walking past Camp Kesem’s table without giving it much thought, but one of the guys was being super persistent and enthusiastic that I eventually caved in and signed up!

How did you get your camp name?

Someone asked me what one of my favorite childhood cartoons was, and I said the Powerpuff Girls.  A couple of people said they liked the name Blossom, and I did too, so now my camp name is Blossom!

Why do you do CK?

I bet I can give an even better answer after camp, but this year I joined Camp Kesem because I wanted to be involved as a freshman, and out of all of the first of the year mass meetings I went to, Camp Kesem’s stuck out the most to me. Every Michigan Kesem counselor seems incredibly nice and fun, camps in general are always so much fun, and this camp is for a great cause. It is something I definitely wanted to be a part of.

If you could choose one celebrity to be a Camp Kesem counselor, who would it be?

I would probably choose Zooey Deschanel because she seems so nice, funny, and down to earth. I also think she would be able to sing some pretty good campfire songs.

pumpkin

This will be Pumpkin’s 3rd summer at Camp Kesem.

How did you hear about Camp Kesem?

I was sitting at breakfast in my freshman year dormitory and saw a flier. It said “Do you want to be a camp counselor?” and I was like “YES!?” then “Has someone in your family been affected by cancer?” My uncle had recently passed away from cancer that month, and I had never lost someone so close to me from cancer. I had never felt so eager to join a group in my life.

How did you get your camp name?

Pumpkin- my cousin Elise calls me it. Since I had red hair I thought it would be easy for the kids to remember too.

What is your favorite camp activity?

I like all the unorganized fun that creates itself while at camp. In between activities and when the nights are winding down are when I see my campers bond and support each other so much. It always amazes me to see how mature the campers are and how willing they are to have new campers join their family.

What is the craziest/silliest thing you’ve ever done at camp?

I didn’t know I was volunteering to be a human sundae my first year, so that was pretty…nuts. :)

If you could choose one celebrity to be a Camp Kesem counselor, who would it be?

Bill Murray in the form of Johnny Depp.
