Camp Kesem Story
Camp Kesem is a week-long, magic-filled camp for children of cancer patients. Camp Kesem started in 2000 at Stanford University. After becoming a National Organization in 2002, Camp Kesem has grown to 54 college campuses across the country! In 2013, over 2,800 campers and over 1,400 university volunteers were involved in Camp Kesem.
Camp Kesem Magic Comes to BYU
Camp Kesem started at Brigham Young University from very small means in the summer of 2008 but has grown steadily each year since. We recently completed our 2013 camp session. We were delighted to serve 73 campers! We are continuing to build on past success and we hope to serve 100 campers in the 2014 session. For now, follow us on facebook, twitter, and instagram for the latest event details!
The camp has been held for several years at Camp Kostopoulos. While we are grateful to Camp Kostopoulos for their help and hospitality over the years, due to our growth and expansion, we are moving this year to Camp Wapiti, located in Settlement Canyon in Tooele, Utah. Camp Wapiti will allow us to continue to grow and serve more families, while providing great services and programming opportunities. Camp this year will be from August 11-16, 2014.
Our camp activities include sports, arts and crafts, and drama to give campers a fun-filled week. Campers also participate in “cabin chats” with fellow campers and counselors, giving children the chance to share their experiences coping with a parent’s cancer with each other. There are plenty of laughs and lots of emotional support, although no formal therapy is offered/permitted. The tremendous fun and peer-support campers experience is what makes Camp Kesem a transformative, magical week for campers and counselors alike.

Camp Kesem’s Relationship with BYU
Camp Kesem is a Community Service Provider of Brigham Young University. The activities of Camp Kesem at BYU are entirely organized and directed separately from Brigham Young University, its employees and administrators. Donations made to Camp Kesem do not benefit nor are solicited on behalf of BYU. Camp Kesem uses BYU student volunteers, but is not a BYU organization and is not sponsored or funded by BYU. Camp Kesem uses “at BYU” for the sole purpose of distinguishing itself from other chapters of Camp Kesem. For more information regarding the relationship between Camp Kesem and Brigham Young University please contact our directors at email@example.com or visit yserve.byu.edu.
Our mission is to empower a generation of student leaders by allowing responsible university young adults to make a meaningful difference. Camp Kesem is organized and operated by the leaders of tomorrow who gain hands-on experience in fundraising, finance, marketing and project management. In addition to real-world skills, Camp Kesem enables student-leaders to discover their passion for serving others.
