Being creative when you think you aren’t creative

How do you get the staff to be really creative?

Well, creativity is tricky because often the only obstacle to real creativity is ourselves.  During training, I would take some time to talk about that.  The myth of creativity.  The truth is that we are all creative people, we just need to exercise the muscle every once in a while.

The best way to get staff to be more creative is to challenge them to think about it differently.  Creativity is not necessarily doing something that is groundbreaking or brand new.  Most creative activities or endeavors are just tweaks on a different idea.  So for camp’s purpose think about it like this.

  1. What do the campers expect? (at activities, during specific times, from individuals, etc.)
  2. Do something they don’t expect.

Expectation + Variation = Creative Experience

If you do that each time you engage with campers you will turn into a counselor that is riding a make believe horse to soccer where we will play a game with 4 balls.
