Scooby here again, happily reporting in for duty.
The past few weeks have been busy ones for us!
We just got done with our winter reunion and it went fantastically! I think I can speak on behalf of all the counselors when I say that we loved seeing our kids and getting to hang out with them for a few hours. I know that it reminded me of camp all over again (especially with the unseasonably warm weather!) and it made me that more excited for camp this upcoming summer. Thanks again to everyone who came out to Augustana to hang out with us. There was no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We had a few great photographers take over 100 photos and post them to our Camp Kesem Augustana page. So be sure to check them out! Highlights captured include musical chairs, cookie decorating, dangling doughnut devouring, and unit pictures, just to name a few. Also if you havent already, be sure to spread the love, like our page on facebook, and share it with all of your friends and family. As you all know, the best way to get the word out about Kesem is by word of mouth and I dont think we could have a more able-bodied group of parents as our parent base. If you know of any families that would benefit from Kesem, please forward the application links to them as the time progresses on.
On that note, if you havent already and you'd like your children to return to camp, dont forget to fill out the online application to ensure their spot! We hope to see them there!
Now for a few nuts and bolts and some things that are in the pipes for us for the next few weeks:
We've got a few bake sales underway (if we've learned anything, it's that college kids love food), as they are always successful on this ravenous campus. We're also selling some t-shirts in conjecture with APO–our service fraternity on campus. Additionally, we will be doing our silent auction with them once again this year, and we're really grateful for their support of our great cause.
Additionally, we'll be engaging our counselors and student group to fundraise and raise awareness in their home towns over break. This will include getting some door-to-door work, business donations, corporate sponsors, and brown bagging to get supplies for next year's camp.
These are just a few of the things we've got coming up. As you can see, we're incredibly busy and enthused about our work as we move closer to camp.
Of course with the holiday season well underway, take this time to remember the important things in life as we go on about our days during this busy season. It is easy to classify it as a consumers paradise: giftsare gotten, 50% deals are seemingly everywhere, doorbusters chase us out of our beds faster than the first snowfall does, and we find ourselves wrapped up in the culture of consumerism. But let us also remember during this time the powerful gift of giving. Let us not focus on what we can get, but more on what we can give–and not from a consumer's viewpoint. Recall to your roots what this season is really about; spend time with family, cherish the moments we have with those around us, and take heart in the smiles on our loved ones' faces as they open their gifts, rather than wondering what is in ours. “Give freely to the world these gifts of love and compassion. Do not concern yourself with how much you receive in return, just know in your heart it will be returned.” That is the greatest thing we can do this season. If nothing else, let us remember to love each other for what we have, and spend every moment we can holding on to those wrinkles in time that can't be bought back: our children frolicking in the snow, a cup of hot chocolate, and maybe a crackling fire late at night as we decorate our houses accordingly to the holidays we celebrate. If we love, we shall never be disappointed with the results of our holidays. If we love, we always have full hearts and happy hands. So remember to love this season, because at the end of the day, love is all we really have.
Anyways, that's all I've got for you guys today. Thanks for reading, and thanks again for coming out to our reunion. We can't wait to see you all again real soon!
